Its election time again and the tension is so thick that you
can actually use a knife to cut it. There is news of killings of innocent
people across the country, fighting and kidnapping is on the increase. The local
media greets us with news like 8 people feared dead as APC and PDP clash in
Kaduna, 4 killed in Taraba as PDP and APC supporters clash, PDP and APC
representative clash over alleged stolen N30tn under Jonathan government, PDP
and APC thugs kill 3, injure others in Lagos, bomb blast in Rivers state court,
bomb blast outside PDP presidential campaign rally in Gombe state among others.
The question is, is it really worth it? Is any politician
worth your blood or worth the blood of any Nigerian?
It is time we begin to realize that all politicians are the
same, they have no permanent enemies and no permanent friends only permanent
interest.
We must realize that in any election there must be a loser
and a winner and a candidate that truly has Nigeria at heart will not put his
selfish interest above Nigeria and the lives of Nigerians.
We must realise that Nigeria is a secular country and no
single religion or ethnic group has monopoly to power.
We must realise that no single human is perfect, and no
single leader can satisfy everybody and every section of any country in the
whole world not even in America, they can only try their best and their best
cannot be good enough for everyone.
God in his infinite wisdom knows why he put us together. It
is our collective responsibility to demonstrate a genuine sense of patriotism, responsibility,
tolerance and commitment to peace and stability, before during and after the election.
As a result all hands should be on deck.
INEC should try to organize a free, fair, transparent and
credible election, this will make it easier for losers and their supporters to
accept their defeat in good faith.
All electoral candidates should calm their supporters and
warn them against making inflammatory and inciting statements.
Our religious leaders should also exercise caution in their
speeches and instead focus on praying for our leaders and for the peace of
Nigeria.
We don’t need war or violence in Nigeria we need peace, and
only Nigerians can work together in unity for this peace.
